This is my website dedicated to the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird
The Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird were introduced in September of 1966. General Motors, the parent company of Chevrolet and Pontiac, developed the F-Body Platform to compete directly with the succesful Ford Mustang. The First generation Camaro and Firebird, produced from 1967 to 1969, came with a wide variety of engine and trim levels, from six cylinder 2 speed manuals, small block V8's, to big block V8's including the awesome 427 ZL-1 all aluminum, very limited 1969 model.

The Second generation Debuted in 1970 1/2. It had a more futuristic design, and was available in base, RS, Z28, and SS trim levels. The most common engine and transmission combination in the second generation was 350 cubic inch and four speed manual. It was the model of Camaro and Firebird that suffered through the first emissions controls and the gas crisis, when power levels dropped to a miserable 180 horsepower in a V8!

In 1982, the Third Generation Camaro and Firebird were introduced. The handling of the Third Gen cars was much better than the previous F-Body cars. It was also the first apperance of the quad sealed beam headlights. Power levels in the Tuned Port Injected cars, or TPI, finally was creeping up to above 200hp again. Also, 1989 marked the fastest GM produced F-Body to date, the Pontiac Turbo Trans Am, capable of 0-60 times under 4.8 seconds. 1991 also marked the first year for the Firehawk, a GM option that SLP Engineering, founded by ex drag racer Ed Hamburger, produced. 1992 marked the 25th anniversary of the Camaro and Firebird.

In 1993, things got interesting. The Fourth Generation Camaro and Firebird commenced production at the St. Therese, Quebec, Canada plant. They had one big difference. GM switched front suspension setups to a coil over shock setup, rather than the more conventional MacPhereson Strut arrangement. The F-body's got the 275hp LT1 5.7L Aluminum headed engine, shared with the Fourth generation Corvette. Also new for 1993 was a Six speed Borg-Warner T56 transmission. in 1995, the Camaro recieved ASR, or Acceleration Slip Regulation, and the Firebird V8 recieved TCS, or Traction Control System, both optional. In 1996, Power was bumped up to 285hp for Firebirds and Camaros, and it marked the debut of the 305hp SS Camaro and WS6 Ram Air Firebirds, both produced by SLP Engineering, who was still making their trademark product, the Firehawk. There were 106 LT4(330hp) Camaro SS's and a little over 20 LT4 Firehawks.

In 1998, the Fourth Gen cars got new life with the LS1 all aluminum Gen III V8 from the Corvette, the first all new small block V8 in years. The only thing it shares with its predecessors is the 4 inch bore of the cylinders. In stock Z28 and Trans Am trim, it put out 305hp(conservativly rated), and in SS and WS6 trim put out 320 horsepower. THe SS and Firehawk, produced by SLP still, had the option of an upgraded dual-dual exhaust, good for a 7hp bump to 327HP. In 1999, GM released the 30th anniversary Trans Am WS6, White with Blue stripes. In 2001, the LS1 recieved an across the board 5hp bump to 310 fr Z28 and Trans Ams, and 325 for SS's and WS6's. Also for 2001, the 10th anniversary Firehawk was released by SLP Engineering. 2002 will mark the 35th anniversary of the Camaro and the Firebird, due to be unveiled in June at Carlilse. It is so that this will be the last year for an American Legend in its current form. General Motors announced the demise of teh F-body platform in September of 2001. Production is scheduled to cease in September of 2002.
